1. Name calling never wins arguments nor changes reality.

2. Ever heard of punitive laws? They contain very specific threats of anything from money extraction to jailing (which is just another word for kidnapping) even for "crimes" which have no actual victim. Government doesn't merely sanction people who actually harm somebody, but people who harm nobody. In the same laws they often also allow certain levels of use of force against those who resist them which in any case can easily be seen in practice by so called "law enforcement".

3. Even Obama himself said that government is a monopoly on violence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpsBM1rmx-M which means they have the exclusive right to commit violence under the guise of protecting you. Trouble is, this actually makes them the ones you need most protection from.

4. They are a coercive monopoly meaning they monopolize certain industries and don't allow others to compete enforcing that by said threats of force. Competing in such industries is one of those victimless crimes from point 2. Typical examples of such monopolies are protection (police), arbitration (courts) and often much more (like healthcare which is what Obama wants).

This isn't to say that people other than government can't provide these services as well, but it means that they have to have a special permission from this monopoly and that people still aren't given a choice not to pay government for some of these services and instead pay someone else (because taxes are mandatory). They therefore either completely smother or from day one control all competition. Government is a complete opposite of a free market.

Think of them as a company like any other company of people for whom masses mistakenly believe are somehow the only ones who do have the right to force their competition out, to override individual's property rights by intrusive laws which same individuals weren't given a choice to agree to, to steal their money by arbitrary decrees under the guise of helping the poor while spending most of it on bureaucracy and war etc.. Any company which acts in such an anti-free-market way is a rogue company, a mafia, yet people still believe them. This belief will however collapse, just as the economic system based on illusion that is fiat money is collapsing.
Reality always spoils the fantasy.

If you're any bit curious and I hope you are unless you're posting here solely to jibe me, consider reading or listening to this book (it was eye opening to me who like you and most people considered those who don't believe in government as "loons" too): The Market for Liberty.

You're a loon. The government is only violence if you redefine violence. The government is public schools and firefighters. Those are violence? You skewer yourself.

If rejecting the use of coercion and violence as means of "getting the job done" is a "bad idea" then I'm all for that bad idea.

Extortion, racketeering, intimidation etc. are all just practical matters of getting the job done as well. And they do the job indeed, yet we don't consider those in any way legitimate.

So you can sit there and pretend there's some sort of a difference or you can, at the very least for your own self, admit to what's pretty apparent and obvious, that government is violence and that IF you are not to support violence, you should be interested in alternative ways of social organizing, those that don't include coercion.

How's that for a really badass idea? ;)

Modern libertarianism is nothing but a collection of bad ideas designed to justify being a churl.
Politics is not about ideology. Ideology is a distraction from politics. Politics is a practical matter of getting the job done and doing its part to keep a healthy society. Recognize that it's just another craft before adopting your views, or you will always make bad judgements, such as the above.
